Every house has a list of things (call them rules, call it a code, etc.) that everyone in the home understands and lives by. The list is a catalyst for unity, and that is somehting we value very highly at Percheron. We aim to provide a clean, safe, excellent, & fun environment for everyone, but just like with any home - it takes everyone working together to make it happen. We say "Let's Ride" a lot. That means US. Going. Together.
Here are some of our primary housekeeping items. Call it the "gym rules", call it "etiquette", call it whatever you want... Just do your part. ๐ค๐ผ
BOOK AHEAD.
Classes can be booked up to 2 weeks in advance. So don't wait until the last minute to book. We plan each class workout and the equipment layout based on how many people are booked for each day's classes. Help us make sure that you walk in to the best workout environment possible.
CANCEL EARLY.
Our AM coaches go to bed early since they are up at 4am or earlier to get the gym ready for your class. They typically check the next mornings roster before they go to bed. They also come straight from full-time jobs to coach PM classes. That's why we ask that if you are going to cancel a class that you do so in the app as soon as you can. There's nothing like chugging coffee on your way into the gym at 4am to realize that your 5am class bailed and just forgot to cancel in the app. And no, we don't do penalty burpees... but if you don't cancel & it costs someone else that spot in class, we will invoice you for that class.
BE ON TIME.
We cover a lot in our one hour classes and utilize every possible minute. We expect you to arrive on time and stay through to the end of class. If you are going to be late, or must leave before the end of class, please come and go quietly and respectfully.
CHECK YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR.
Please check your ego at the door. No one cares how much you can lift. We DO care how well you lift, though... and that you show up... and how hard you try while you're here.
INTRODUCE YOURSELF.
Please introduce yourself to all newcomers (or someone you donโt recognize). Remember when you were the new guy or gal? Aโฏfriendly introduction goes a long way. Need an icebreaker? Ask them their go-to coffee order.
TREAT EMPTY BARBELLS LIKE THEY ARE YOUR BABY.
Would you drop a baby? We certainly hope not. We use an empty barbell a lot in class. When putting the barbell down, gentlyโฏplace it on the ground with the utmost care and admiration for the fine piece of equipment that it is. And while weโre at it, thatโฏalso goes for barbells that are loaded with 10 lb. bumpers only. No dropping those either. Once you graduate to loading with at least 15 lb. bumper plates, then we can discuss proper dropping. Until then, just don't.
CHALK USAGE.
Chalk stays in the chalk bucket. Yes, youโll have to walk all the way to the chalk bucket to dust your hands. Reach INTO the bucket. Use the chalk INSIDE the bucket. Don't break the blocks. While some peopleโฏbelieve that chalk is the magic fairy dust of performance, a light dusting of your hands is all you need. And for the love of all that's good - think of the people who have to clean it all up after class.
CHECK YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND STICK TO YOUR OWN EQUIPMENT.
The gym floor is not your oyster, itโs many peopleโs oyster. If you set up on one pull-up bar, donโt take someone elseโs spot just becauseโฏtheyโre not there. If your wallball is further away from the rest of your equipment than you would like, well then, run to theโฏwallball, donโt use someone elseโs just because itโs closer.
KINDERGARTEN RULES STILL APPLY.
You have to clean-up after yourself. Itโs your responsibility to get out and put away your equipment, count your own reps (all ofโฏthem), get your own towel or water, and clean off your bars/equipment. Plus, by carrying those big boxes all the way across the gym floor, youโllโฏgain a lot of fitness.
DON'T BREAK DOWN YOUR EQUIPMENT UNTIL EVERYONE HAS FINISHED THE WORKOUT.
At Percheron, no one breaks down their equipment until everyone has finished the workout. This is a common courtesy that you tooโฏwill one day benefit from as everyone is last in the workout someday. You can cheer on others, grab a foam roller, or just sit in front of the fan andโฏenjoy the downtime, but donโt touch your equipment.
CLEAN OFF YOUR BARS.
Itโs quite possible that at some point in your workout career here, you may bleed on a pull-up bar or barbell. Please, please, please clean off yourโฏbar with one of the gym disinfectant wipes.
PHONES & HEADPHONES.
No phones on the gym floor. If you need to keep track of weights and scores, use a whiteboard, paper, a post-it, or counter clicker until the end of class and then you can record your time/score. Additionally,โฏheadphones are for the big box gyms and you self-selected out of that, plus itโs rude and standoffish. We suffer together.
EXTRA CLOTHING & PERSONAL ITEMS.
We get it. Sometimes, the gym can be warm, other times it may be a bit chilly. Sometimes, the humidity is unbearable and you have to discard a layer to kill the feeling of suffocation. Nonetheless, please keep all extra clothing, jackets, gym bags, etc in the lounge area. If you have to run back and forth to get grips or a jump rope - just consider it bonus cardio. The gym floor is for working out, not storage of personal items. Keep those in the lounge and keep the gym floor clear for hard work.
GO THE DISTANCE.
Every athlete pushes themselves in a different way. You can scream, grunt, cry, go to your happy place, bleed, or even restโฆjustโฏdonโt quit. The human body is capable of more than you can possibly comprehend; challenge it accordingly.
Did we forget one? If so, leave a comment or email us here: hello@percheronfitness.com and we'll add it to the list.
